Bio
Asmadi Abdul Wahab, known as Adi, was born on February 3, 1976, in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. His first cartoon was published in the Gila-Gila humor magazine while he was still in school. It inspired Adi to become an artist and made cartoonist Lat his reference.Adi received informal art education from several renowned local artists, including cartoonist Rejabhad, portrait painter Iedet at Pasar Seni, legendary animator CD Hamdan, and the country's leading children's book illustrator, Mohd Yusof Ismail, better known as 'Yusof Gajah'.His talent was first spotted by Cikgu Aziz, the senior manager of an animation production company, when Adi was at Pasar Seni.At the age of 17, Adi began his artistic career at Lensamation, where he worked on notable Japanese animation series such as Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, Sailor Moon, Shoot, and Crying Freeman for Toei Animation Japan.Based on that experience, he was invited by CD and YM Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman to start the biographical comic Anak-Anak Sidek, which gained popularity around 1996.Along with novelists YM Raja Azmi, CD, and Salim, Adi was involved in creating the comic from the beginning, which eventually grew into a giant comic and animation company in Malaysia.Adi continued to excel by successfully developing his own animation concept, Edy & Cici, which aired on RTM, ASTRO, and several international TV stations. In 2002, under the guidance of Yusof Gajah, Adi won the prestigious 13th Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustration in Japan. His illustrated work, The Red Cage, has been exhibited at the International Library of Children’s Literature in Tokyo, Japan, and at BIBIANA International House of Art for Children in Bratislava, Slovakia. In 2004, Adi settled in the United Kingdom to further his studies in children's book illustration.Upon his return to Malaysia, he served as an illustrator at Blue-T Publication, headed by Mr. Othman Mohamed and Mrs. Saadah Taib - a well-known company among parents and children that produces Ana Muslim and Sayang Muslim magazines.Adi also joined the Malaysian Board on Books for Young People (MBBY) under the leadership of Datin Paduka Shahaneem Hanoum, working to elevate local children's books to the international stage. In 2007, Adi founded Seniman Kecil, a platform dedicated to providing creative experiences for every child.
